Sclerotherapy may be right for you if you have uncomfortable and visible varicose veins and spider veins that you want to get rid of forever. The best way to find out if you are a good candidate for sclerotherapy is to have your veins examined by our specialist. Sclerotherapy is a time-tested treatment to remove varicose veins and spider veins that has been effectively used for decades.
What is Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a medical treatment that destroys the damaged vein so it collapses and is absorbed by the surrounding tissue. Once this happens, the blood that was trying to flow through that vein naturally goes to one of the many other healthy veins. A chemical called a sclerosant that irritates the vein wall is injected into the affected vein. This causes the blood to coagulate and the vein to collapse.
What to Expect
If sclerotherapy is a good option for getting rid of your varicose and spider veins, you will be given a medical examination and asked a few questions. You need to tell our vein specialist if you are pregnant, take any prescription or over-the-counter medication including dietary supplements, have any allergies and if you have a history of heart disease or blood clots. If you smoke, you will be asked to stop smoking for a few weeks before and after the procedure for better tissue healing. Sclerotherapy is not recommended for pregnant women, but after delivery and breastfeeding, it can be done.
Depending on the extent of the vein or veins being treated, the procedure may take 15 – 30 minutes. It is done in our offices and does not require anesthesia. If you prefer a local anesthetic, you can have it. The chemical is injected directly into the vein with a very tiny needle. The vein wall is irritated by the chemical, usually saline solution, causing it to stop functioning. Pressure is put on the vein to make sure it collapses. We will ask you to wear compression hose for a few weeks after the procedure to keep the veins closed. Immediately after the procedure, you will be asked to walk for about 10 minutes to help normal blood circulation.
Once your veins are gone, they will not return. However, other veins can become damaged if your lifestyle is the reason the veins became damaged in the first place. If for your job you have to stand or sit for long periods, you should take a few minutes to either sit with your legs raised for a few minutes every hour or two or get up and walk around for a few minutes every hour.
